South Africa spans 1,220,813 km² and has three capitals: Pretoria (administrative), Cape Town (legislative) and Bloemfontein (judicial). Traffic drives on the left. With 12 official languages, nine provinces and extraordinary regional variety, it rewards travellers who allow time to understand how different each part of the country can feel.
A little history makes the journey mean so much more
South Africa's story begins long before European settlement, with indigenous Khoisan communities and powerful African societies whose histories shaped the region for centuries.
Colonial rule: The Dutch East India Company established a permanent refreshment settlement at the Cape in 1652. British control followed in the 19th century, alongside frontier conflict, dispossession and the expansion of settler rule. The South African War (1899–1902) was followed by the creation of the Union of South Africa in 1910.
Apartheid: Racial segregation existed long before 1948, but after the National Party came to power that year it was turned into a formal system of apartheid. South Africans were classified by race, communities were forcibly segregated and the Black majority was denied fundamental political and civil rights. Resistance came from the ANC and many other organisations, activists, communities and ordinary people; Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison.
Democracy: Negotiations in the early 1990s dismantled apartheid. South Africa held its first fully democratic election in April 1994 and Nelson Mandela became president. Today it is a constitutional democracy, while the social and economic legacy of apartheid remains visible.
Why this matters when you visit: Places such as Soweto, Vilakazi Street and the Apartheid Museum make far more sense with this context. They are not side attractions to the wildlife and scenery; they are central to understanding the country.
What made this trip extraordinary
The cable car to the top gives you one of the great views in the world — Cape Town spread below you, the Atlantic on one side, the Cape Peninsula on the other and Robben Island visible on a clear day.
Walking among African penguins on a beach at the southern tip of the continent — one of those completely unexpected wildlife encounters that makes you stop and laugh with sheer delight.
An open vehicle, the African bush coming alive around you, and the Big Five appearing out of the early morning light. There is simply nothing else like it anywhere in the world.

Before you go — the practical stuff
There is no single best season for the whole country. Cape Town has a Mediterranean-style climate, while safari regions have different rainfall patterns. Drier months can make wildlife easier to spot; warmer months bring greener landscapes and strong birdlife.
The currency is the South African rand (ZAR). Cards are widely useful in cities and tourism areas, but having some local cash is still sensible. Avoid relying on a fixed exchange rate when planning.
South Africa has 12 official languages, including South African Sign Language. English is widely used in tourism, but the country's multilingual character is part of what makes travelling here so interesting.
South Africa commonly uses Type M sockets, alongside other socket types. Check that your travel adaptor specifically covers South Africa before you leave rather than assuming a generic adaptor will fit.
Distances are enormous and traffic drives on the left. Domestic flights, organised transfers and multi-day tours can simplify an itinerary that combines Cape Town, safari country and neighbouring Eswatini.
Malaria precautions can be relevant in parts of the north-east, including areas around Kruger. Check current travel-health guidance before departure, especially if your route includes safari regions.
