Twelve days across the most extraordinary country on earth
South Africa is one of those destinations that operates on a completely different scale to everything else. The sheer variety of what it offers — world-class cities, ancient wilderness, extraordinary wildlife, deeply moving history and some of the warmest and most resilient people on earth — is unlike anywhere else we have been.
Cape Town set the tone immediately. Arriving to see Table Mountain dominating the skyline is one of those arrival moments that stays with you — and the city more than lives up to it. The Cape Peninsula tour was spectacular: the Cape of Good Hope, the fynbos nature reserve, the penguin colony at Boulders Beach that stopped us in our tracks and the beautiful drive back through Kirstenbosch.
The game drives in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi and Kruger National Park were among the most thrilling experiences of our entire travelling lives. Being in an open vehicle at dawn watching the African bush come alive around you — and then seeing the Big Five in their natural habitat — is genuinely unlike anything else. Kruger in particular is vast and wild and endlessly surprising.
The stop in Eswatini added a rich cultural dimension to the trip — the Ngwenya glass factory, the Matsamo Cultural Village with its traditional dance and song, the beautiful landscape of the kingdom. A perfect complement to the wildlife days on either side of it.
And then Soweto and the Apartheid Museum brought the trip to a close in the most profound way possible. The Apartheid Museum is one of the most important museums we have ever visited — it does not flinch from the truth of South Africa's history and leaves you moved, informed and determined to understand more. The visit to Mandela's former home and Bishop Tutu's former residence in Soweto made history tangible in a way that no book ever quite manages.
South Africa is a country that gives enormously — and asks you to receive it all with open eyes and an open heart. We left changed by it. We would go back tomorrow.
