The city nobody talks about—but should

We headed to Bydgoszcz in December 2024 with a friend, and from the moment we arrived the city felt like an unexpected discovery. Most people we spoke to before travelling had barely heard of it. By the end of the weekend, we could not understand why.

Saturday was devoted to the Christmas markets, the Old Town and beautiful Mill Island. The market lights were genuinely stunning: blue arches, illuminated buildings and reflections across the Brda made the whole riverside glow.

The greatest surprise was the warmth of the people. We met locals who were delighted that Irish visitors had chosen their city and went out of their way to show us the best of Bydgoszcz's nightlife—places we would never have found on our own.

We flew home already talking about returning. Bydgoszcz was beautiful, affordable and refreshingly unhurried: exactly the kind of under-the-radar destination Two for the Row'd loves finding.

Expect warming drinks, grilled meats, sweet pastries and festive snacks. It is a lovely atmosphere, but coeliac visitors should ask carefully about ingredients and shared grills or utensils.

Pierogi

Traditional Polish dumplings come with numerous fillings, but standard dough contains wheat. Nicola needs a dedicated gluten-free version with safe preparation.

A proper night out

Our evening with locals proved that Bydgoszcz has far more going on after dark than its quiet reputation suggests. The centre has welcoming bars without big-city prices.

Research safe venues before arriving and ask about cross-contamination. Carry the phrase: Mam celiakię. Muszę jeść bez glutenu.
