Wrocław —
magical markets and one unforgettable weekend

We headed to Wrocław in December 2025 for the Christmas markets — and got rather more than we bargained for. A dramatic first night, a magical Saturday afternoon wandering the markets, extraordinary architecture, brilliant food and drink, and some of the friendliest people we have ever met. Wrocław in December is cold, beautiful and absolutely worth it.

🇵🇱 The Trip

The story

The trip that had everything — including a Polish hospital.

"Only on a Two for the Row'd trip could you land on a Friday evening and end up spending the night in a Polish hospital. But that is exactly what happened — and Wrocław still managed to be absolutely magical."

We flew into Wrocław on a Friday evening in December 2025, full of excitement for the Christmas markets. What followed was not quite what we had planned — a friend took a turn in the pub and we found ourselves navigating a Polish hospital for the rest of the night. Not the start we had imagined, but a story we will be telling for years.

The Polish healthcare staff were brilliant — warm, professional and genuinely kind. A reminder that the friendliness of the Wrocław people extends well beyond the city's restaurants and market stalls.

By Saturday afternoon we were out and about, and Wrocław more than made up for the rocky start. The Christmas market on the Rynek is genuinely one of the most beautiful we have ever seen — hundreds of wooden stalls, the smell of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts in the air, and the stunning baroque buildings of the Old Town lit up all around. It is the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel like you have stepped into a Christmas card.

The food was brilliant and remarkably good value — pierogis, hearty Polish soups and excellent drinks that barely dented the wallet. Everything in Wrocław is affordable compared to most Western European cities, which makes it a brilliant destination for a weekend break.

We flew home on Sunday morning with tired legs, warm hearts and one very good story. Wrocław — we will absolutely be back.

Common questions

Wrocław FAQ

Is Wrocław worth visiting for the Christmas markets?
Absolutely — Wrocław is one of the best Christmas market destinations in Europe. The main market on the Rynek is magical, with hundreds of stalls, mulled wine, traditional food and a festive atmosphere that is hard to beat. The city's beautiful architecture lit up at Christmas makes it even more special.
How cold is Wrocław in December?
Very cold! December temperatures in Wrocław typically hover around 0°C to 3°C and it can feel significantly colder with wind chill. Pack your warmest layers, a heavy coat, thermal underlayers and proper winter boots. The cold is part of the Christmas market experience — but you need to be prepared for it.
Is Wrocław good value for money?
Yes — Wrocław is excellent value compared to most Western European cities. Food, drinks and accommodation are all very affordable, which makes it a brilliant destination for a weekend break. You can eat and drink very well without spending a fortune.
What are the must-see sights in Wrocław?
The Rynek (Market Square) is the heart of the city and one of the most beautiful in Central Europe. St. Elizabeth's Cathedral is stunning inside and out. The famous Wrocław dwarfs — small bronze gnome statues hidden around the city — are brilliant fun to hunt down. And at Christmas, the whole city centre becomes a wonderland.
How many days do you need in Wrocław?
A long weekend of three to four days is ideal — it gives you time to explore the Old Town properly, visit the Cathedral, hunt for the dwarfs, enjoy the Christmas markets at a leisurely pace and sample the food and drink scene. Even a short two-day visit like ours gave us a real taste of what a special city it is.
Are the people in Wrocław friendly?
Incredibly so. We found the people in Wrocław to be some of the warmest and most welcoming we have encountered on our travels — and that extended to some unexpected situations too! English is fairly widely spoken in the city centre, restaurants and hotels, making it a very easy destination for Irish and British visitors.

What to pack for Wrocław in winter

Winter packing essentials — what we'd bring

Wrocław in December is seriously cold — think 0°C or below with wind chill. This is not the time for light layers and sandals. Wrap up properly and you will have an amazing time. These are the things we would not leave home without.

🧣
Thermal underlayers

The secret weapon against the cold. A good thermal base layer under your clothes makes a massive difference when you are out in sub-zero temperatures for long periods.

🥾
Warm waterproof boots

Wrocław's cobbled streets can be icy and wet in December. Warm, waterproof boots with a good grip are essential — your feet will thank you after a full day out.

🧤
Gloves & warm hat

Your hands and head will get very cold very quickly at the markets. Thick gloves and a proper warm hat are absolutely essential — don't forget them.

🔋
Portable power bank

Cold weather drains phone batteries incredibly fast. A power bank is even more essential in winter than in summer — keep it in an inside pocket to stop it dying in the cold.

📶
eSIM card

Handy for maps, bookings and staying connected without paying roaming charges — especially useful for navigating the Old Town and finding those hidden dwarfs!

🔌
Travel adaptor

Poland uses Type C and E plugs — different to Ireland. Don't arrive on a cold December evening with nothing charged.

🎒
Small day backpack

Useful for carrying extra layers, a water bottle and any market purchases. Keep it light enough that it doesn't slow you down on a full day exploring.

🩹
Personal first aid kit

Always worth having — and as our trip proved, you never quite know when it might come in handy. Better to have it and not need it!

🧴
Travel toiletries

Compact travel toiletries keep packing easy — especially on a short weekend break where you want to travel with hand luggage only.
