Our Wrocław story

The trip that had everything—including a Polish hospital

We flew into Wrocław on a Friday evening in December 2025, full of excitement for the Christmas markets. What followed was not quite the start we had planned: a friend took a turn in the pub and we ended up navigating a Polish hospital for the rest of the night.

The healthcare staff were brilliant—warm, professional and genuinely kind. It was a reminder that the friendliness of Wrocław extends far beyond its restaurants and market stalls.

By Saturday afternoon we were out exploring, and Wrocław more than made up for the rocky beginning. The Christmas market on the Rynek was genuinely magical, surrounded by elaborate façades glowing under the lights.

We hunted for bronze dwarfs, explored the Old Town and climbed the narrow tower at St Elizabeth's Basilica. The stairs were no joke, but the panoramic view across the rooftops was worth every single one.

We flew home on Sunday morning with tired legs, warm hearts and one very good story. Wrocław—we will absolutely be back.

We loved it

Market Square & Christmas Market

The enormous Rynek is framed by colourful façades and the Gothic Town Hall. At Christmas it fills with wooden stalls, decorations, warming drinks and a brilliant festive atmosphere.

St Elizabeth's Basilica

The church stands beside the Market Square, but the real adventure is its narrow tower staircase. The climb is demanding and enclosed; the rooftop panorama is magnificent.

Hundreds of small bronze figures hide across the city. Hunting for them turns an ordinary walk into a scavenger hunt and brings you down streets you might otherwise miss.

Cathedral Island

Ostrów Tumski is Wrocław's oldest quarter, with churches, bridges and riverside views. Visit towards dusk for a quieter and more atmospheric side of the city.

Our advice: Collect a dwarf map and let the hunt guide your walk. Also, the St Elizabeth's tower is narrow and strenuous—wear sensible shoes and skip it if enclosed staircases are not for you.

Food, drink and a Polish winter

Christmas-market treats

Expect warming drinks, grilled meats, potatoes and sweet pastries. The atmosphere is wonderful, but coeliac visitors must ask about ingredients and shared preparation.

Pierogi

Traditional dumplings are perfect winter comfort food, although standard dough contains wheat. Nicola needs a dedicated gluten-free version with safe preparation.

Hearty Polish soups

Soups are ideal after hours in the cold, but żurek contains rye and other recipes may use flour. Confirm ingredients before ordering.

Gluten-free planning

Research safe venues before arriving and ask about cross-contamination. Carry the phrase: Mam celiakię. Muszę jeść bez glutenu.

Is Wrocław worth visiting for Christmas?

Absolutely. The extensive market, colourful Rynek and festive atmosphere made it one of our favourite European Christmas breaks.

How many days do you need in Wrocław?

Two full days work beautifully. A Friday-to-Sunday break gives enough time for the Old Town, dwarfs, Cathedral Island and Christmas market without rushing.

How do you reach the city from Wrocław Airport?

Bus 106 connects the airport with the main railway and bus stations in roughly 40–50 minutes depending on traffic.

When is the Wrocław Christmas market?

It usually begins near the end of November and continues until Epiphany around the Market Square. Dates vary, so confirm them on the official city tourism website before booking.

How difficult is St Elizabeth's tower?

The long, narrow and enclosed staircase requires reasonable fitness and is unsuitable for some visitors, but the rooftop views are outstanding.

Is Wrocław suitable for coeliac travellers?

It can be, with research. Explain that you have coeliac disease, check ingredients and preparation, and be especially careful with shared market grills and fryers.
