Our first stop after crossing from Finland into Russia in 2018. We spent a few hours sightseeing in historic Vyborg, with its medieval castle and fascinating mix of Nordic and Russian influences, before continuing on to St Petersburg.
A stop on the way from Helsinki to St Petersburg
We crossed from Finland into Russia as part of our organised 2018 tour and stopped in Vyborg before continuing towards St Petersburg. It was our first taste of Russia and a fascinating change of scene after Helsinki.
What struck us was how different Vyborg felt from Helsinki. Its architecture and history reflect its position between the Nordic and Russian worlds, which made it an interesting introduction to the country.
The standout for us was Vyborg Castle, sitting dramatically beside the water. We had time for sightseeing and photographs around the historic area before the tour continued on to St Petersburg.
We didn't spend long enough in Vyborg to pretend this is an in-depth guide. For us, it was a memorable stop on the route into Russia and a place that added another layer to the journey.
Historical context — general information
A city at the crossroads of history
Vyborg Castle. Vyborg Castle dates to 1293 and was founded during the period of Swedish expansion in the region. Over the centuries it was altered and rebuilt as control of Vyborg changed hands. Its long history is one of the reasons the city feels so different from the later imperial grandeur of St Petersburg.
Layered history. Vyborg's position close to Finland has given it a complicated history under Swedish, Russian and Finnish rule at different times. That layered past is reflected in the city's architecture and character.
The city today. The historic centre, castle and waterfront are the features that give Vyborg much of its visual character. Our own visit was brief, so this section is background context rather than a claim that we explored every part of the city.
The border experience. Its location near the Finnish border made Vyborg a particularly fitting first stop on our route from Helsinki into Russia.
The main attractions
Vyborg Castle & Tower
The city's defining landmark and the main focus of our stop. The castle's tower dominates the waterfront and made an immediate impression as we arrived.
The Old Town
Vyborg's older streets and historic buildings give the centre a very different feel from the Russian cities that came later on our itinerary.
The Waterfront & Bay
The castle's position beside the water is a huge part of its impact, and the waterfront setting gave us some of our favourite photographs from the stop.
The Cultural Layer
The interest of Vyborg is not just one monument. Its Swedish, Finnish and Russian history gives the city a layered identity that makes it an unusual stop on this route.

Vyborg was not a standalone holiday for us. It was part of our organised 2018 journey from Helsinki into Russia, and we stopped there for a few hours before continuing to St Petersburg.
