The Sea of Galilee —
where the Gospels came vividly to life
Of every place on our nine-day pilgrimage, the Sea of Galilee affected Nicola most deeply. The landscape, the boat crossing and her Jordan River baptism made it unforgettable.
Crossing the Sea of Galilee
Our group crossed the lake by boat, with time to take in the surrounding hills and reflect.
This is the landscape in which Jesus called fishermen as disciples, preached to crowds, calmed the storm and, according to the Gospels, walked on water.
The lake is not merely a backdrop to the New Testament stories. Being physically present gives the Gospel accounts a geography and immediacy that is difficult to communicate until you experience it.
Capernaum and the Mount of Beatitudes
Capernaum became the centre of Jesus’ Galilean ministry. Its archaeological remains and places associated with St Peter bring together scripture, history and the life of a real lakeside community.
At the Mount of Beatitudes, traditionally linked with the Sermon on the Mount, the atmosphere is peaceful and reflective.
Our itinerary also included Magdala and places associated with Jesus’ ministry around the lakeshore.
Tabgha and the Church of the Multiplication
At Tabgha, we visited the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes, traditionally associated with Jesus feeding the multitude.
The church’s famous mosaics and peaceful location close to the shore make it another important stop on the Christian pilgrimage route around the Sea of Galilee.
Nazareth and Cana
In Nazareth, Jesus’ hometown, we visited the Church of the Annunciation, traditionally built over the place where the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary.
Its artwork and architecture bring Christian traditions from countries around the world together in one remarkable complex.
We also visited Cana, associated with the wedding feast and Jesus’ first miracle.
Nicola’s Jordan River baptism
Nicola was baptised in the Jordan River during the pilgrimage. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and the emotional high point of the entire journey.
The nine-day itinerary included Jordan River experiences on day four at Qasr al-Yahud and again in the Galilee region at Yardenit.
These are two distinct baptism locations, so travellers should check which site is included in their own itinerary.
Caesarea, Akko and Haifa
Before travelling onwards to the Galilee, our itinerary followed the Mediterranean coast through three very different places.
At Caesarea, we explored the remains of Herod the Great’s Roman city, including its theatre, harbour and ancient aqueduct.
Akko revealed layers of Crusader and Ottoman history, while Haifa offered beautiful coastal views and the spectacular Baháʼí Gardens.
