Bethlehem —
at the heart of the Nativity story

Our visit to Bethlehem was among the most fascinating and thought-provoking parts of the pilgrimage—not only for its Christian importance, but for what the journey revealed about the modern region.

Crossing from Jerusalem

At the checkpoint, the Jewish Israeli guide who had accompanied our group was replaced by a Muslim Palestinian guide for our visit to Bethlehem.

It was a striking illustration of the region’s complexity: two guides and two perspectives on the same land and its histories.

Our Palestinian guide’s knowledge of Bethlehem’s biblical sites was extraordinary. Travelling with local expertise gave us context that a quick independent visit could never have provided.

Church of the Nativity and Manger Square

The Church of the Nativity, traditionally identified as the birthplace of Jesus, is one of the world’s oldest continuously operating churches. Entering it after a lifetime of hearing the Nativity story was deeply moving.

Manger Square outside the church has its own atmosphere: a living civic space surrounded by faith, history and present-day Palestinian life.

Bethlehem, Jericho and the Jordan River

Day four continued through the Judean landscape to Jericho, one of the world’s oldest cities, with views towards the Mount of Temptation.

The day concluded at Qasr al-Yahud on the Jordan River, traditionally associated with the baptism of Jesus.

The itinerary connected the Nativity, the Judean Wilderness and the Jordan River in one extraordinary day.
