The history of Carlow is more extraordinary than most people realise — and we're here to prove it. We're Nicola and Pádraig and we're from Carlow, which means we've spent years watching people drive straight through our county on the way to somewhere else. Carlow is one of the smallest counties in Ireland and one of the most historically extraordinary. A doctor blew up the castle. A mansion burned under suspicious circumstances with a banshee curse attached. The largest megalithic capstone in Europe is sitting in a field three kilometres from the town centre. The stories that make people say "wait, that happened in Carlow?"
A doctor who blew up a medieval castle trying to convert it into a lunatic asylum. A Gothic mansion burned to the ground under suspicious circumstances with a banshee curse attached. And a prehistoric tomb with a capstone heavier than anything else in Europe — sitting in a field three kilometres from the town centre. This is the history of Carlow, ladies and gentlemen.

The Doctor Who Blew Up Carlow Castle
In 1814, a local physician called Dr Philip Parry Middleton leased Carlow Castle — a magnificent 13th-century Norman fortress that had survived 600 years of war, sieges and Cromwell — with the intention of converting it into a lunatic asylum. To create more space, he decided to use gunpowder to thin the walls. He used rather too much. The two eastern towers and their adjoining walls collapsed completely. Today, only the western wall and two towers remain. One historian of the time described him as "a ninny-pated physician" who used "blasts of gunpowder for enlarging the windows and diminishing the walls." If it had survived intact, Carlow Castle would have been comparable in scale and grandeur to Kilkenny Castle.

Duckett's Grove — the Banshee, the Curse and the Mysterious Fire
About ten kilometres from Carlow town sit the extraordinary Gothic ruins of Duckett's Grove — once the centrepiece of a 12,000-acre estate. On the night of 20 April 1933, the house burned to the ground. The cause was never officially established. A legend holds that a young woman had an affair with one of the Ducketts, died after a fall from her horse, and her mother placed a Piseóg on the family. A banshee is said to haunt the ruined towers to this day. The ruins and walled gardens are free to visit.

Browne's Hill Dolmen — Older Than the Pyramids, Three Minutes from Town
Three kilometres east of Carlow town sits one of the most extraordinary prehistoric monuments in Europe. Browne's Hill Dolmen is a Neolithic portal tomb built between 4,000 and 3,300 BC — predating the Egyptian pyramids by over a thousand years. Its granite capstone weighs an estimated 100 to 150 tonnes, making it the heaviest megalithic capstone in Europe. The site has never been excavated. Free to visit, open always.

The town played a role in the 1798 Rebellion, has connections to Daniel O'Connell, Kevin Barry and the War of Independence, and is home to some of Ireland's finest Georgian architecture including the Courthouse designed by William Vitruvius Morrison. Yes — Walt Disney's ancestors on his father's side were from County Carlow, and members of the Disney family are buried in the county. One of the most extraordinary and least-known historical connections in Ireland.
Who was Myles Keogh?
Myles Keogh was born in Leighlinbridge, County Carlow. He served in the Papal Army in Rome, fought in the American Civil War and was killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn — Custer's Last Stand — in 1876. His horse Comanche was the only US cavalry survivor of the battle.
