The spots you might drive past a hundred times until one day you stop — and realise you've been missing something class. This page is our growing collection of hidden Irish gems, unusual places to visit, and underrated attractions that deserve far more attention than they get.

Why we started this

Ireland has so much more than the tourist trail

Most Ireland travel content covers the same ground — Dublin, Galway, the Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry. All brilliant, all worth visiting. But Ireland is crammed with incredible places that never make it onto the tourist itinerary, and that's exactly what Hidden Ireland is about.

We've been stopping at ruins on the side of roads, pulling into villages nobody told us about, finding waterfalls on unmarked tracks, and chatting to locals who pointed us toward places we'd never have found otherwise. Every single one of those moments made us think — why does nobody know about this?

So we started filming them. This is that collection.

What we look for

What makes somewhere a proper hidden gem?

🏰
History with no queue

Ancient ruins, ringforts, Norman castles, monastic sites — Ireland has thousands of them and most have no visitor centre, no entrance fee, and no crowds.

🌊
Scenery that stops you in your tracks

Not every beautiful view in Ireland is on a postcard. Some of the most dramatic landscapes are down unmarked roads that most people never turn onto.

🧭
The kind of place locals love

If the locals are proud of it but tourists don't know about it yet — that's exactly what we're after. Those places have an authenticity you can't manufacture.

📖
A story worth telling

The best hidden gems aren't just pretty — they have history, folklore, character. Places that make you want to know more once you're standing in front of them.

🚗
Easy to add to a road trip

Most of our hidden gems are on or near main roads — they just require knowing where to turn off. Ireland is the perfect size for this kind of spontaneous exploring.

😮
The "why did nobody tell me about this?" feeling

That's the test. If we finish a visit thinking that — it goes on the list. Every time.

Some of our favourite finds

Hidden gems we've visited and filmed

These are some of the kinds of places we cover in our Hidden Ireland series — the ones that stopped us in our tracks and made us reach for the camera.

🏰
Leinster
Forgotten Castles & Ruins

Ireland is littered with Norman castles, tower houses and ancient ruins that you can walk right up to with nobody else around. No ticket, no queue, just history.

All over Ireland
Ancient Monastic Sites

Early Christian monasteries, round towers, and stone crosses that predate most European cathedrals. Often in fields with a small sign and nothing else.

🌿
The Midlands
The Hidden Midlands

The most underrated part of Ireland. Boglands, rivers, canal walks, and historical sites that get a fraction of the visitors they deserve.

🌊
Coastal Ireland
Secret Beaches & Coves

While everyone heads to the same well-known beaches, Ireland has hundreds of quiet coves and hidden strands that barely see a visitor from one week to the next.

🏘️
Everywhere
Villages Worth Stopping In

The kind of Irish village with a brilliant pub, a curious local, a story behind every building, and not a tour bus in sight.

🗿
Ancient Ireland
Megalithic Tombs & Stone Circles

Older than the pyramids, sitting in Irish fields with a small OPW sign and sheep for company. Some of the most atmospheric places on the island.

Planning an Irish road trip?

Tips for finding hidden gems in Ireland yourself

The best discoveries happen when you leave the main road.

🗺️
Get Google Maps offline

Download your route area before you go. Rural Ireland has patchy signal and you don't want to be lost without a map.

🔵
Look for the blue OPW signs

The Office of Public Works marks historical sites all over Ireland with small blue signs. If you see one, pull in — it's almost always worth it.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑
Ask locals

The best hidden gems aren't on TripAdvisor — they're in the head of the person behind the counter in the local shop. Ask where's worth stopping nearby.

Don't over-schedule

The best moments on an Irish road trip are the unplanned ones. Leave gaps in your day for turns you didn't plan to take.

🌦️
Embrace the weather

Ireland is beautiful in every kind of weather — even the grey days. Moody skies over ancient ruins are some of the best photos you'll ever take.

Common questions

Hidden Ireland FAQ

What are the best hidden gems in Ireland?
Ireland is packed with hidden gems that most tourists never find — ancient monastic sites, forgotten Norman castles, secret beaches, dramatic viewpoints down unmarked roads, and villages with more character than the famous ones. The key is getting off the main tourist trail and being willing to pull in when something catches your eye. Our Hidden Ireland series documents 22 of our favourite finds — watch them all on our main site here →
What parts of Ireland do tourists miss the most?
Most tourists stick tightly to the west coast and Dublin. That means huge swathes of Ireland are almost entirely overlooked — the Midlands, South Leinster, County Carlow, County Kilkenny's quieter corners, County Wexford, parts of Tipperary, and the lesser-known stretches of the coastline. These areas have incredible history and scenery with a fraction of the crowds.
What are the best day trips from Dublin?
Some of the best day trips from Dublin that most visitors miss include the Wicklow Mountains and lesser-known valleys, the ancient sites of County Meath beyond Newgrange, the historic town of Kilkenny and its surroundings, the coastal villages of County Louth, and the underrated attractions of County Carlow. Most are within 1.5 to 2 hours of the city.
Is Ireland good for a road trip?
Genuinely one of the best countries in Europe for a road trip. The island is small enough that you can cover a lot of ground without exhausting drives, the roads are quiet outside of cities, and the scenery changes dramatically every 20 minutes. The best Ireland experiences happen when you have a car and the freedom to turn off when something looks interesting — which is constantly.
Are there free things to see in Ireland off the tourist trail?
Loads — and some of the best things in Ireland are completely free. The OPW (Office of Public Works) maintains hundreds of historical sites around the country that you can visit for nothing. Ancient ringforts, megalithic tombs, ruined abbeys, holy wells, and battlefield sites are scattered across every county and most have no entrance fee whatsoever. The hardest part is knowing where to look.
What is the best time of year to visit Ireland?
Every season has something going for it honestly. Summer (June to August) gives you the best weather and longest days but also the most tourists. Spring and autumn are brilliant — mild, quieter, and the light is incredible for photography. Winter is dramatic and atmospheric, especially at ancient sites. For hidden gems specifically, any time outside of July and August is ideal because you'll have most places entirely to yourself.

Planning a bigger trip beyond Ireland?

If Hidden Ireland has given you the travel bug and you're thinking about heading further afield, we've also documented our Morocco trip in full — 26 videos covering Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara desert, and everything in between. We booked the whole thing through TourRadar and it was one of the best trips we've ever done.
