Zurich —
polished, international and utterly Swiss wealth
After the medieval fairytale of Bern, Zurich felt like stepping into a completely different Switzerland. Polished, wealthy, international and sleek — Zurich is where Switzerland puts on its cosmopolitan side. Lake Zurich gleaming in the sun, Bahnhofstrasse stretching through the city with luxury shops, trams gliding silently through clean streets, and historic churches like Grossmünster and Fraumünster standing proud above it all. Coming on our Interrail trip, Zurich was where our backpacker budget felt most challenged, but it was also undeniably beautiful and modern in ways that Bern simply wasn't.
Where Switzerland feels international and wealthy
Zurich is Switzerland's largest city, and it feels like it. There's an energy and modernity here that contrasts sharply with Bern. The main shopping street, Bahnhofstrasse, is one of the world's most expensive retail streets — lined with luxury brands and high-end boutiques. As young Interrailers on a tight budget, we window-shopped more than we shopped.
But the real heart of Zurich is Lake Zurich. On a clear day, with mountains in the distance and sunlight on the water, it's genuinely stunning. The lakefront promenade is one of those walks that feels therapeutic — peaceful, beautiful and a place where locals and tourists alike slow down and just soak in the views.
The historic city center is charming too — narrow lanes lead to churches like Grossmünster and Fraumünster, both with interiors that feel special. The architecture mixes medieval and modern, and wandering through the old town squares feels grounded compared to the sleek Bahnhofstrasse energy.
Crystal-clear water, beautiful scenery with mountains in the distance. The lakefront promenade is perfect for walks and watching the light change throughout the day.

Iconic twin-spired church with beautiful Gothic architecture. Climb the tower for views over the city and lake.
Historic church famous for its stained glass windows — especially the works by Marc Chagall. Beautiful interior and peaceful atmosphere.
Zurich's efficient tram network glides silently through clean streets. Using them is part of the experience — everything runs perfectly and on time.
Medieval and Renaissance buildings, narrow lanes, small squares and a completely different atmosphere from the modern Bahnhofstrasse area.
Navigating Zurich on an Interrail budget
The lake is your friend. Much of Zurich's beauty is free — walking the lakefront, sitting by the water, taking in the views. This is where to spend time if your budget is limited.
Bahnhofstrasse is for looking, not buying. Window-shop, people-watch, soak in the Swiss wealth on display — but don't expect to afford much unless you're not on an Interrail budget.
Trams are excellent and reliable. A day ticket is worth it to jump on and off, exploring different neighborhoods and neighborhoods beyond the obvious tourist spots.
The churches are worth visiting. Grossmünster and Fraumünster are free or very cheap to enter, and their interiors are genuinely beautiful. The Chagall windows in Fraumünster are particularly moving.
Food is expensive but quality. Expect to eat from supermarkets and bakeries. Swiss chocolate and pastries are beautiful consolations for a backpacker budget stretched thin.
