But what made Rotorua genuinely one of the most moving experiences of our entire time in New Zealand was the Māori cultural evening — the traditional hāngī meal and the haka performance that genuinely brought us to tears.

The Māori cultural evening

More than just a meal — a genuine cultural experience

The evening started with a welcome ceremony and a genuine sense of stepping into something sacred and significant. The hāngī meal itself — meat and vegetables slow-cooked in an underground pit using heated rocks — emerged smoky and tender, unlike anything we've had before.

"The haka was extraordinary. You know it's coming, you've seen it a thousand times on TV — and it still absolutely floored us. The power of it, the emotion, the connection to something ancient and proud. We were genuinely moved to tears."

Watching a traditional haka performed live, by local Māori performers in full costume and with the force that comes from cultural connection rather than tourist entertainment, is an entirely different experience than seeing it on a rugby broadcast. There is real power in it. Real meaning. The intensity of the movement, the unified strength of the performers, the emotional weight of it — it's impossible not to be moved by it.

Geothermal Rotorua

Beyond the cultural experience, the geothermal area of Rotorua is genuinely otherworldly. Geysers fire boiling water and steam hundreds of feet into the air, mud pools bubble and hiss, and hot springs steam all around you. Pohutu Geyser is one of the most active geysers in the world and watching it erupt is genuinely spectacular.

Why this matters

Experiencing Māori culture from the people themselves, learning their history, seeing their connection to the land and their pride in their identity — it gives you a completely different understanding of New Zealand. This is not a tourist show with a checkout desk. This is a living, breathing culture and being welcomed into it is genuinely one of the most meaningful experiences available in New Zealand.

What is a hāngī meal?
A hāngī is a traditional Māori method of cooking where food — typically meat, vegetables, and potatoes — is placed in a pit with heated rocks and covered with earth or cloth to slow-cook. The result is smoky, incredibly tender, and completely unlike anything you'll have had before. It's the centerpiece of the Rotorua cultural experience.
Is the Māori cultural evening worth doing?
Without hesitation, yes. Learning about Māori culture, history and traditions from the people themselves gives the whole evening a depth and authenticity that made it one of the most memorable nights of our entire time in New Zealand. The hāngī meal and haka performance are experiences you'll remember for the rest of your life.
Should I visit the geothermal areas?
The geothermal landscapes of Rotorua are genuinely otherworldly — geysers, hot springs, mud pools, and steaming valleys. Pohutu Geyser is one of the world's most active geysers. Even if you're not overly interested in natural attractions, the landscape is worth seeing. It's unique to Rotorua.
How long should I spend in Rotorua?
One to two days is ideal. This gives you time to experience the geothermal areas during the day and participate in the Māori cultural evening. If you have more time, there are additional experiences available, but the highlights can be covered in 1-2 days.
