Munich — biergartens, Bavaria and history
The last stop on Nicola's 2005 interrail trip through Germany, and the one that delivered on every promise of Bavarian hospitality. Munich was the biergarten capital of the world and everything it claimed to be — long tables, chestnut trees, cold beer and locals who actually wanted to talk to you.
Marienplatz, the Glockenspiel and the English Garden
Marienplatz and the Glockenspiel were the obvious starting point — the scale and theatre of the square gives you an immediate sense of the city. From there, the English Garden was the real highlight: one of the great biergartens of the world under the chestnut trees, the sort of genuinely joyful, sociable travel experience that's hard to replicate anywhere else.
The sheer scale of Munich, and the Bavarian atmosphere running through it, made it a fitting final stop on the trip.

Dachau
On the same trip, Nicola visited the Dachau Memorial Site — the first Nazi concentration camp, now preserved as a memorial and place of remembrance. It is an easy day trip from Munich, and it left a lasting impression.
Dachau is deeply moving and important. It is sobering, educational and deeply humanising, and it is a place we would encourage anyone visiting Munich to make time for. This isn't a typical tourist stop, and it shouldn't be approached as one — but it is, in its own way, essential.
