We spent four nights based in Stone Town during our 2023 honeymoon, and it was one of the most atmospheric and fascinating places we've ever stayed. The old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a labyrinth of narrow streets lined with ornate carved wooden doors, bustling bazaars, mosques and churches standing almost side by side, and the scent of spices drifting through every corner. Stone Town is where Zanzibar's extraordinary cultural diversity becomes tangible — a blend of African, Arab, Indian and European influences that feels genuinely alive.
Four nights in the atmospheric old city
Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason. Every narrow lane tells a story — the Arabic architecture is stunning, the ornate carved wooden doors are works of art in themselves, and there's a wonderful sense of layered history at every turn. The contrast between the quiet, shadowed passageways and the bustling bazaars is striking. One moment you're wandering through almost silent residential streets; the next, you're surrounded by the noise, colour and chaos of the spice markets.
What struck us most was the religious and cultural harmony we witnessed. The island is predominantly Muslim, but Christianity is also very much present — and the two coexist with a warmth and mutual respect that is genuinely inspiring. It's not unusual to see a mosque and a church within a stone's throw of each other, their communities going about their daily lives side by side. It gave the whole place a feeling of peace and openness that we have rarely encountered anywhere in the world.
The atmosphere is absolutely unique — especially at certain times of day. The call to prayer echoing across the rooftops at dawn, the scent of spices and fresh bread wafting through the streets, the dhow boats on the harbour at sunset. These are the moments that make Stone Town so memorable. Wandering through the streets at golden hour, with the light hitting the old stonework and the call to prayer in the background — that's the Stone Town experience.
A local guided wander through the old city
If there's one thing we'd recommend for any visit to Stone Town, it's hiring a local guide. Having someone who knows the city — who understands its history, its layout and its hidden corners — completely transforms the experience.
A guided wander through Stone Town gave us context for everything we were seeing. Our guide showed us the carved doors — each one intricate and beautiful, often telling a story about the family that lived behind it. We explored the spice markets and learned how to haggle respectfully (a key skill!). We visited the mosques and churches, and heard about the remarkable coexistence of faiths on the island. We saw the old slave market — a sobering and important part of Zanzibar's history — and understood how deeply it has shaped the island's identity.
Beyond the tourist highlights, a local guide takes you to the quiet corners of Stone Town — the residential streets where everyday life happens, the small tea stalls, the workshops where craftsmen are still working. It's in these moments that you really understand what it's like to live in this extraordinary old city.

Making the most of your Stone Town visit
Dress respectfully
Stone Town is a Muslim-majority area and modest dress is respectful when exploring the old city. We'd recommend lightweight linen trousers and loose tops that cover your shoulders. It's not just about respect — it's also far more comfortable in the heat and you'll blend in better with the local community. During our stay, dressing modestly meant we had far more authentic interactions with people in the city.
Bring plenty of cash
Cash is absolutely essential in Stone Town. While larger hotels and resorts accept cards, the markets, smaller restaurants and bazaars run entirely on cash. US dollars are widely accepted alongside Tanzanian shillings. Bring significantly more than you think you need — the haggling culture is wonderful and part of the experience, but you'll want cash to hand at all times. If you run out, you'll miss out on amazing finds in the markets.
Take a guided walking tour
A local guide is invaluable. They'll show you the hidden corners of Stone Town, explain the significance of what you're seeing, and help you understand the cultural dynamics of the city in a way you simply wouldn't grasp on your own. It completely transforms the experience.
Start early
The heat in Stone Town can be intense. Explore in the early morning or late afternoon when it's cooler and the light is beautiful. Midday is best spent in a tea shop or resting in your accommodation.
Learn basic Swahili greetings
A simple "Habari!" (hello) or "Asante" (thank you) goes a long way. The locals appreciate the effort and it opens doors for more genuine conversations and interactions.
Visit the spice markets
This is the real Stone Town experience. The sights, smells and sounds of the markets are incredible. Haggle respectfully, ask questions, and buy spices you'll actually use back home — they're a wonderful memory of the trip.
