Milford Sound —
fjords, waterfalls & glacier scenery

Milford Sound is described by some as the eighth wonder of the world and it's not an exaggeration. The fjord is dramatic beyond belief — waterfalls cascade down thousand-metre cliff faces, glaciers feed into the ocean, and the sheer scale of the landscape makes you feel genuinely small. The cruise through the sound is an experience you'll remember for the rest of your life.

The Milford Sound experience

The Milford Road — one of the world's most spectacular drives

Getting to Milford Sound involves a drive that is genuinely one of the most beautiful in the world. The Milford Road winds through Fiordland rainforest, crosses numerous valleys and presents views of mountains and waterfalls that genuinely seem too dramatic to be real. Weather can change rapidly so the drive itself is an adventure — one moment you're driving in sunshine, the next you're in thick fog, the next minute you're in pouring rain watching waterfalls multiply on the cliff faces.

The Milford Sound fjord cruise

Once you reach Milford Sound and board the cruise boat, the day moves into another dimension entirely. The fjord is surrounded by vertical cliff faces that rise thousands of metres, with waterfalls cascading down some of them. The water is dark and deep, often reflecting the mountains so perfectly it's hard to tell where mountain ends and water begins.

"Standing on the deck of the boat looking up at the cliffs, watching waterfalls pour down from the sky, seeing glaciers in the distance — it's the kind of landscape that genuinely doesn't look real until you're standing in it."
