The Whitsundays were everything they promised. We spent the day on a catamaran gliding through some of the most beautiful stretches of ocean we'd seen — the Coral Sea, dotted with 74 tropical islands, all sitting on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef.
The water, the islands, the light — every bit as stunning as it looks in the brochures. One of those days that reminds you exactly why you got on a long-haul flight in the first place.

Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island is one of the most celebrated beaches on earth — seven kilometres of impossibly pure, brilliantly white silica sand. The sand is 98% silica, so fine it squeaks underfoot, and so pale it looks almost otherworldly against the turquoise water.
The Hill Inlet lookout at the northern end gives the view that appears on every postcard of the Whitsundays — the swirling patterns of white sand and clear water as the tides mix them together.

Getting there: Most travellers fly into Hamilton Island Airport or Whitsunday Coast Airport (Proserpine). Airlie Beach on the mainland is the main jumping-off town for day trips.
Day trip vs multi-day sail: a full-day catamaran is the easiest introduction. Multi-day sailing trips (2-3 nights) let you stay out on the water and reach quieter corners.
