K'gari — formerly known as Fraser Island — was gorgeous. The world's largest sand island, with freshwater lakes sitting incongruously in the middle of sand dunes, dingoes roaming the beaches and a landscape that looks like it shouldn't exist but absolutely does. A brilliant stop that often gets overlooked by people racing between Cairns and Sydney.
The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and completely unique — 120km long, made entirely of sand, and yet home to towering rainforest, freshwater dune lakes, wild dingoes and some of the most beautiful beaches in Queensland.
The island was known as Fraser Island for many years but has officially been restored to its original Butchulla name — K'gari (pronounced roughly "gurri"), which means "paradise". The Butchulla are the traditional custodians of the island and the name change reflects a broader recognition of Aboriginal cultural heritage across Australia.
Some tour operators, guidebooks and older maps may still use "Fraser Island" — they refer to the same place.
